Why we joined

UBC is currently one of two members of CIRTL outside the United States. The culture of measuring the effectiveness of teaching strategies for student learning is strongly embedded across UBC undergraduate teaching, so future faculty have a rich and fertile environment to learn about and evaluate best practices in the undergraduate classroom. There is an existing strong foundation of support on campus for graduate students who teach, which is provided centrally through the Centre for Teaching, Learning and Technology, and locally through departments.

The Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies is an important partner in CIRTL-UBC, as their Graduate Pathways to Success program encourages students to broaden their immediate horizons and skill sets beyond their disciplinary dissertation research. In addition, their Public Scholars Initiative enables doctoral students to integrate scholarship in areas of public benefit, such as Teaching-as-Research projects, into their discipline Ph.D. thesis.
